William Corel was born April 7, 1828 in Virginia. William was the ninth child, and second son of William Corel and Rebecca Oney.

William Corel traveled with his family from Virginia to Missouri, and once the Kansas Territory was opened to settlers, onto Douglas County, Kansas. In 1855 William was living with his mother, Rebecca Oney Corel, and siblings. On the 1855 Kansas Territory Census, William is listed as a farmer and a registered voter.

Margaret A. “Mary” McGee and William Corel

Since there is no evidence of William being married in the 1855 Census, I estimate that William married Margaret A. “Mary” McGee between 1855 and 1857 in Douglas County, Kansas. Margaret was the oldest of the 15 children of Mary Ann Neidigh and James Joseph McGhee. This union was likely the first of three between the Corel’s and McGee’s.

November 25, 1863, William Corel and Margaret McGee sold to Thomas Sternburgh land with the legal description of: SW1/4 of SE 1/4 S32 T12 R20. On January 5, 1865, Thomas Sternburgh sold that section of land to a committee of Lawrence City Council for $75.00 per acre. At this time it was deeded to Lawrence for a cemetery. The cemetery is known as Oak Hill Cemetery and has the same legal description of the land that was once sold to Thomas Sternbaugh by William and Margaret.

By 1870 the family had moved to Agency Township, Osage County, Kansas. In 1880 they are found in Melvern Township, Osage County, Kansas. Margaret McGee Corel died on January 20, 1894 in Melvern Township, Osage County, Kansas and is buried at the Sutton Cemetery in Osage County, Kansas.

William remarried a short time later, on July 15, 1894. His new wife was Isabella Hornbeck who was born in September of 1835. William and Isabella are listed on the 1900 census living in Melvern Township, Osage County, Kansas. William died August 19, 1903 in Melvern Township, Osage County, Kansas and was buried next to his wife, Margaret McGee Corel, in Sutton Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas.
