Louvina Jane Spence was the first child born to Henry Jefferson Spence and Mary Anna Ratliff, born in April 1886 in Kansas1. On February 25, 1905, Louvina married John Calvin “Cal” Haskins in Crawford County, Kansas2. John Calvin Haskins was born July 14, 1886 in Montrose, Missouri3. Cal and “Minnie” are listed on the 1910 census in Washington, Crawford County, Kansas4. I believe that “Minnie” is an enumerator error for “Vinnie” because although the census states that the couple has been married for 1 year, the ages match up, as well as Cal’s occupation as a coal miner. Vina and JC Haskins are found on the 1915 Kansas State Census in Dunkirk, Crawford County, Kansas5. On June 5, 1917 Cal registered for the World War I Draft and indicated he and his wife lived in Dunkirk, Crawford County, Kansas where he worked as a coal miner3.
Sadly, Cal died a short time later, February 23, 1919. At the time of his death, John Calvin was working as a blacksmith helper, was a member of the Pioneers lodge and was survived by his widow, Mrs. Vina Haskins7.
The 1920 census find Vina Haskins listed as a servant with the Probst family8.
After the 1920 census I am not able to find anything on Louvina Haskins, however, I did find Lavina Spence in 1937, with 2 people in the household9 as well as Mrs Louvina J Spence as late as 196310.
