Jonathan Peart
Jonathan Johnson Peart was born on 10 Nov 1809 in Fayette County, Kentucky as the second child of James Peart and Elizabeth Johnson.1 He had twelve siblings. By 1813 the Peart family was living in Logan County, Kentucky.2 When he was 25, Jonathan married Cassandra D Bailey, daughter of George Bailey and Martha “Patsy” Rice, on December 22, 1834 in Logan County, Kentucky.3 4
Nothing further is found on Cassandra Bailey-Peart, but I have an unresearched, unverified feeling that Cassandra Bailey-Peart likely died during (or shortly after) childbirth of her daughter Cassandra J (possibly Johnson?) Peart. Cassandra J Peart was born about 1834.5 6 Purportedly, she is the first child of Boanerges R Peart and Sphelia “Sarah” Bailey.7 My issue with B.R. and Sarah being the parents of Cassandra starts with the marriage date of B.R. and Sarah in 18418, 7 years after Cassandra’s birth. In 1849, the guardian of Cassandra J Peart was George Hines, husband of Frances Bailey.9
On August 3, 1839 Jonathan J Peart purchased Lot 58 from William Collins, and his wife Elizabeth Collins in the town of Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.10 January 4, 1840 he then sold part of Lot 58 to Mr. Elijah Wilkerson.11 On January 19, 1841 he was living in Westport, Jackson County, Missouri.12 Jonathan had an $87 promissory note secured by his remaining land in Lot 58 come due on March 5, 1841 to Mr. Cary A Lee; Mr. Lee filed suit against Jonathan on April 5, 1841.13
Leona “Oney” Biggs
Leona P Biggs was born on 28 Apr 1824 in Montgomery County, Virginia as the third child of Moses Biggs and Elizabeth Surface. She had eleven siblings.7 15 By 1830 the Biggs family moved to Wayne County, Indiana.16 They continued on to Johnson County, Indiana by 1840.17 18
Jonathan & Oney
When he was 32 and she was 18, on August 23, 1842, Jonathan and Leona were married in Platte County, Missouri.19 20 21 22 On December 14, 1842 Jonathan was on the losing end of the suit filed by Mr. Cary A Lee in Jackson County, Missouri when the Jackson Co Sheriff issued a deed to collect $87.00 in damages.23
Children of Oney & Jonathan
- Stuart was born about 1843.
- Mary Louisa was born September 7, 1844.
- William B. was born July 25, 1848.
Stuart, the first child of Oney Biggs and Jonathan Peart was born about 1843 in MIssouri.24 Nothing further has been found on Stuart. The couple was blessed with their second child, Mary Louisa on September 7, 1844.25 On July 25, 1848 the couple welcomed their youngest child, William B Peart into their lives.26
Peart Family in the 1850s
Sadly, Leona “Oney” Biggs-Peart passed away on January 9, 1850 in Jackson County, Missouri.7 15 On August 8, 1850 Stuart, Mary, and William were living with William Corel and family in Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri.29 A few doors down, it appears that their father, Jonathan, was living as a boarder and working as a stone mason on August 9, 1850.30
In 1850 Cassandra is living with George and Frances Hines and Columbus Peart in Disctrict 2 of Logan County, Kentucky.5 When she was 17, Cassandra married William M Powell on November 5, 1851 in Logan, Kentucky.32
In 1854, J.J. Peart is listed in the Douglas City Poll-book for the Second District in the Kansas Territory.33 J.J. is found again on the 1857 Johnson County, Kansas Territory Voter’s Census with 2 males living with him.34 I can only assume that Stuart and William were living with Jonathan in 1857. Curiously, I have not been able to locate Jonathan, Stuart, or Mary on the 1855 Kansas Territory Census, but I have found William Peart living with Cosby Jane and William Justice in District 2.35
Peart Family in the 1860s
Mary Peart lived as a servant with the Marquis household on the 1860 census taken on June 26, 1860.36 On August 16, 1860 Jonathan and William “Parrott” were enumerated on the 1860 census in Tharps, Ballard County, Kentucky with Cassandra and William Powell and their three daughters: Mary F. born about 1852, Ophelia D. born about 1856, and Nora born about 1858. I found it most interesting that Jonathan is listed as being blind.37
On November 12, 1865 Jonathan is recorded in the Logan County, Kentucky Deed Book 39 on Page 557.7
Jonathan died in Kentucky on April 7, 1870.39
