Henry Jefferson Spence

Henry Jefferson “Jeff” Spence was the first child born to Martha Jane McGlothlin and John Spence.  He was born September 14, 1856 in Lawrence County, Kentucky1.  In 1884 he married Mary Anna “Annie” Ratliff2. Mary Anna Ratliff was born to Louvina Hunt and Robert Ratliff (son of Mary Jane McGlothlin) in 1869 in Virginia3.   In 1885 the couple was living with Annie’s parents4. Jeff and Annie had nine children.

Martha Jane McGlothlin

Martha Jane McGlothlin is the third child of Jemima Corel and David McGlothlin.  She was born about 1841 in Tazewell County, Virginia.  Martha Jane travelled with her parents and extended family to Jackson County, Missouri.  After her mother died, Martha Jane moved back to Johnson County, Kentucky with her father and siblings.

Henry H McGlothlin

Henry H. McGlothlin is the second child of Jemima Corel and David McGlothlin.  Henry H. was born on March 12, 1840 in Tazewell County, Virginia and traveled with his family to Jackson County, Missouri in the late 1840s.  He returned to Kentucky with his father and siblings after the death of his mother.  About 1856 Henry H. decided to return to his extended family who were now living in Kansas.

David Ward

David Ward was born September 25, 1855, in Johnson County, Kentucky1.  David and his younger brother James are found living with their grandparents in Johnson County, Kentucky on the 1860 census2.  In 1870 David and James are living with their father, George W., their grandmother, Lucinda, and probably a cousin, Lucinda Gillum in Toms Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky3.  In 1880 David is found single, working as a laborer, living as a boarder in Louisa, Kentucky4.

Mary McGlothlin

Mary McGlothlin is the first child of Jemima and David McGlothlin, and the first grandchild of William and Rebecca.  She was born about 1838 in Tazewell County, Virginia.  Mary travelled with her parents and extended family to Jackson County, Missouri.  After her mother died, Mary moved back to Johnson County, Kentucky with her father and siblings.

The Answers Are Not Always What You Think

When I first began researching the McGlothlin men that had married daughters of William and Rebecca Oney Corel, I had found that many researchers before me believed that both David (who married Jemima) and Robert Emmitt (who married Rebecca Ann) McGlothlin were the sons of Revolutionary Veteran John McLaughlin and his wife, Judith Leathers.
